The power of the Eucharist

I have a habit of putting favorite quotes on sticky notes and placing them all around my computer screen. When it gets too full, I put the notes in a journal and some day I will copy them all in there.

One of the quotes I have stuck on my screen now is from Ronald Rolheiser, OMI. It makes me think of the Eucharist in a whole new way. “The Eucharist isn’t abstract, a theological instruction, a creed…it’s bodily, an embrace, a kiss, something shockingly physical…Skin heals when touched. It’s why Jesus gave us the Eucharist.”

I try to keep this beautiful image in my mind as I receive the Body and Blood of our Lord. It makes it a very personal, physical encounter. It’s the best thing that will happen to me all week. It’s the only thing that really matters. Nothing can top that!

In this issue, be sure you read Deborah McCann’s article on the Eucharist. She shares thoughtful insights as well as creative suggestions for introducing children to the Real Presence in the Eucharist—ones that will have a lasting impact on their lives.

If, in Eucharist, Jesus gives us “an embrace, a kiss” beyond what we can ever imagine, we will be moved to take the next step and pass Jesus’ love on to all we meet. As catechists, we will be living the sacrament every day from Sunday to Sunday. We will feel the physical presence of Eucharist. May all of you feel the healing touch and great love of Jesus.
