As catechists, you are mentors. Think about it for a minute. A good mentor someone who is a wise and trusted teacher. Mentors are good listeners who offer support and encouragement. Good mentors provide constructive criticism even if it’s hard to hear. Isn’t that what you do every time you gather with the children you teach?

This first year as editor of RTJ’s Creative Catechist, I was blessed to have Gwen Costello as my mentor. What an honor to be guided by one of the most outstanding catechists in the field. Many of you know Gwen as the author of numerous prayer and catechetical books and have experienced her genuineness, knowledge of catechesis, and love of our faith through her writings.

Gwen was editor of Religion Teacher’s Journal for 18 years. I treasure the insight, history, and guidance she shared with me. I thank her for believing in me, offering constructive criticism, and helping me on my editorial adventures this year. She was so patient when she reminded me over and over that my headlines needed to be shorter! I will continue to learn more, but will remember that my journey as an editor began by walking with a master editor and catechist.

So here is my “thank you” to Gwen and all of you mentors. Remember you are a gem—you have great value. You do make a difference. You touch lives and influence others as they continue to grow in their faith.

I look forward to sharing more enriching ideas about catechesis in the September issue, RTJ’s Creative Catechist 2011-2012 Praying and Planning Guide, and all the upcoming issues. May you continue to grow in your faith and ministry as a catechist.
