Where do you begin when building a house, apartment, or high-rise? You begin with the foundation—and it must be strong and secure. We know that if the base is solid, it will support whatever’s built upon it for a long time to come.

So it is with catechists. As we teach, we are laying a foundation under the spiritual “house” the children will—with our help and God’s grace—continue to build for the rest of their lives.

With this issue, we’re giving you the materials you need to build a foundation for a great year. All of the experienced writers we called on for this issue provide you with solid teachings, spiritual support, and the tools you need to model the faith to those you teach.

Take a look inside. There are great spiritual supports from Kathy Hendricks in her column One last thought, and ideas for meaningful traditions from Michael John in Rituals throughout the year. And who can give you more help in technology than Tim Welch?

In Exploring the Sunday gospels, Gwen Costello offers you sure footing on the Scriptures so you can share the meaning of the gospels with children and help them live the message.

But that’s not all. Many of you asked for more insight and projects specifically for children in grades 4 through 6. You will find that in our new column by Connie Clark called Right in the middle. Be sure to check it out!

We haven’t even touched on the main articles, the bonus poster, or the praying and planning guide that will help you lay the groundwork to make a difference this year.

As catechists, let’s continue to add building blocks to our own foundations so we can help those we teach begin to build theirs. As Jesus said, “Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.”

Blessings on your foundation,
